New Athos waterfall

📍 Abkhazia | 🗓 | 📅 01.01.2022 — 24.02.2022
The waterfall in New Athos is man-made - this is a “side effect” of the construction of an arched dam on the Psyrtskha River in 1882 by the monks. The monks of the New Athos Monastery were very practical, so they actively used the waterfall for household needs: they built refrigerator chambers behind the wall of water, organized a system for watering the gardens using special channels, and built a mill on the dam itself, the blades of which were rotated by water. During Soviet times, the place gradually fell into disrepair, but my paternal grandparents still managed to see the waterfall as part of an excursion in 1939.
