The part of the coast that is south of the Hotel Lanka Supercorals deserves kind words. The home of surfers and those who love to jump on the waves and fight the return currents that pull them away from the shore. I’ll say right away that the ocean is constantly changing the underwater bottom topography near the shore and you never know what awaits you. I was in Hikkaduwa in April 2015, and then with a difference of half a year in December 2015. So, during this time the bottom topography pleasantly surprised me. Where in April I was sucked in and carried away from the shore and a surfer saved me, shallows appeared on which you can lie, and you are washed by the rolling waves, just paradise. And all this was formed just opposite the restaurant with bookshelves that we already loved, where we drank strong beer and basked in the sun. In April, be careful of biting midges on this beach; choose better sun loungers. But overall, this is paradise.
First of all, it is best to watch the sunset from here. Secondly, the coastline has been changing a lot lately, for example, at the Citrus Hotel in this
year there was only a narrow strip of sand left and he joined his unfortunate neighbor, the Coral Hotel. The ocean washes sand in one place and washes it in another. For now, surfing spots are working, but it’s not a fact that this will continue to be the case. Regarding comparisons with Merissa. In Merissa, the sand is perfect, the waves, although sudden, are not dangerous. Here the sand is loose and quick, the shore has a large slope, as a result of which the wave pulls the swimmer into the ocean, there are also a lot of stones at the bottom, although not sharp, but the shock wave throws them towards the shore, they can hit you in the leg (tested on myself). Regarding sand flies, they are not noticed during the season, but in the rainy season there are a lot of them (tested on myself). The fate of this beach is a big question; in the three years that I have known it, it has changed a lot.
I’ll say right away that I’m not a history buff, I can only be dragged to such a place by boredom or bad weather. Because I consider it blasphemous to waste time relaxing by the ocean on yet another wall with towers, especially since this Galle fortress is not unique,
the colonialists built them in their own image and likeness. Since boredom and bad weather happen on vacation, I visited this fort three times. I don’t recommend going here in sunny weather; you can only hide in souvenir shops or restaurants, and this, you know, is a waste (meaningless souvenirs). What is more interesting on the territory is not the past, but the present. For example, there is a court on the territory. An interesting sight, intercessors, important lawyers. For Sri Lankans, these are not historical values, but simply buildings. Decide for yourself, we ordered a tuk-tuk, two hours was enough for us.
